What are the main New York airports, and how do I get from them to central New York?
New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is by far the biggest and busiest New York airport, especially for international arrivals. Newark (EWR) and LaGuardia (LGA) are both options as well. Some airlines may generally fly into one or the other—for example, United flights often land in Newark, while Etihad or Qantas may be more likely to have flights into JFK. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter too much, as all three airports are relatively close to the city.
John F. Kennedy International Airport / JFK: The JFK airport is New York’s biggest and busiest, with over 62 million travellers passing through the airport each year. It’s located in Queens, relatively central to the city. You can take the subway directly from the airport to connect with trains and stations anywhere throughout New York City once you arrive. Of course, taxis/Ubers are also an option, but they can be expensive (about $72 AUD).
Newark International Airport / EWR: Although Newark handles a lot of air traffic for New York City, it’s actually located in New Jersey, just across the border from New York City. Even so, it’s really easy to hop on a train or bus into the city from Newark. Newark is a popular airport for lots of flights from Australia, so although it’s a bit smaller than JFK, there’s a good chance you might find yourself flying into here.
LaGuardia / LGA: LaGuardia is also in Queens but is the quietest of the New York City airports. You can get from the airport to the city centre by taking a public bus or hopping on the subway. Although there are some international flights from Australia that may land in LaGuardia, it’s definitely not the most popular of the three.

Since New York is literally on the other side of the globe from Australia, it’s definitely a long-haul flight. But it’s worth it! And thankfully, Australia is fairly well-connected to New York, despite the distance. There aren’t any direct flights, but you can find plenty of connecting flights. Typically the connection is in Los Angeles or San Francisco—also great cities to explore if you’d like to make the most of your stopover!
