What are the main Bangkok airports, and how do I get from them to central Bangkok?
Bangkok has two airports: Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang International Airport (DMK). Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is by far the most popular option for international flights. If you have a layover and are switching to a low-cost Thai airline, you might land in DMK.
Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK): Suvarnabhumi is the most popular (and common) airport for international travellers flying into Bangkok, and there’s a very good chance your flight will land here. Once you arrive, it’s pretty easy to get into the city. The Airport Rail Link train runs from the airport station (at the basement of BKK) to Makkasan Station (downtown) in just 35 minutes, and costs only 15 to 45 baht ($0.65 - $1.95). This is by far the cheapest and easiest option, but taxis are available too, as well as local buses.
Don Mueang International Airport (DMK): Don Mueang is an older airport in Bangkok that’s become a lot less popular in the years since BKK has been operating. Now, Don Mueang mostly services domestic flights and international flights on low cost Thai or Southeast Asian carriers. Airlines like AirAsia, Tiger Air and Thai Smile usually fly into DMK. A taxi is the easiest (though not the cheapest) way to get downtown from the airport. It’ll take about 45 minutes to an hour (more during rush hour) and cost about 350 - 500 baht ($15-$22). You can also take the BTS (light-rail) or a train from Don Muang Train station (about a 15-minute walk from the airport), but it’s a more complicated option and will take 1-2 hours to get into the city.
How to fly from Australia to Bangkok
Australia is fairly well-connected with Bangkok. Although it may be tricky to find direct flights, there are a few nonstop options, plus plenty more connecting flights as well. You can typically find direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The most popular airlines include Qantas Airways and Thai Airways, although of course there’s plenty of other options too if you don’t mind a stopover!

When is the best time to fly to Bangkok?
The best time to visit Bangkok is between November and February, during the cool season. Keep in mind that “cool” in Bangkok means daytime temperatures still around 30 degrees! Temperatures heat up even more in March-May, then rainy season (aka monsoon season) hits from June through October. Although the summer months are peak travel season for Bangkok (so the city and sights will be a bit more crowded), it’s worth it for the most comfortable weather. November is also the month for several popular Thai festivals, including the Thai Lantern Festival and the Monkey Buffet Festival!

Plus, there are lots of free things to do—for example, many exploring one of the many outdoor markets around the city (the Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market are two of our favorites). Most temples are very cheap to visit as well, and you can even take a free meditation class at some!
