In short, not yet. Right now, Australian citizens can travel visa-free in Europe for up to 90 days, but starting January 1, 2021, you’ll need to apply for an ETIAS Visa Waiver before traveling to Europe. Thankfully, this is pretty easily done.

The climate varies considerably across the region, so do some research on the weather in your destination before packing for your Europe trip! And remember that seasons are reversed from Australia. Pack lots of light layers for sunny summer days and plan for chilly, rainy days and snow between October and March, depending on where you’re visiting. Many Europeans dress somewhat formally, so leave your thongs at home! Don’t forget a charger converter for the EU outlets, a reusable water bottle and good walking shoes.

There’s a lot of ways to get around Europe, and you’ll find it’s much more compact than what you’re used to in Australia! From cheap flights to extensive train routes, you can easily cover a lot of ground. Eurail passes are popular among backpackers and long-distance bus options are available too. Of course, you can also rent a car if you’re going to be travelling to some off-the-beaten-path destinations.

One common misconception is that Europe is pretty much the same across the region. Although it’s a smaller area, each country—and different regions within each country—have distinct cultures, languages, foods, climates, customs and so on. Europe is incredibly diverse, so be ready to encounter a lot of unique cultures as you’re travelling! Also, not all Europeans speak English! Try to learn some of the local language before your trip.
